About Me

Welcome! I’m Dr. Arela Agako, a registered clinical psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and founder of the ACMH Clinic.

I completed my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at McMaster University and have gained extensive experience across various clinical settings. At St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, I worked in specialized clinics such as the Women’s Health Concerns Clinic, Mood Disorders Clinic, Youth Concerns Clinic, Sleep Medicine Clinic, and Borderline Personality Disorder Service. My pre-doctoral residency in Northern Ontario allowed me to deepen my expertise in a range of therapeutic approaches, from general therapy to specialized techniques, across inpatient and outpatient programs, private practice, and community-based services.

In  my clinical practice, I focus on helping individuals and couples with a wide range of mental health challenges. My areas of expertise include trauma and PTSD, particularly complex PTSD and intergenerational trauma, as well as high-conflict relationships, Borderline Personality Disorder, and emotion dysregulation. I also work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, insomnia, OCD, stress, burnout, self-esteem and body image concerns, and relationship difficulties. My approach is rooted in evidence-based practices and a commitment to creating a compassionate, inclusive space where clients can feel supported on their journey to healing.

In addition to my clinical work, I have a strong research background, with a focus on emotion dysregulation, particularly during the perinatal period. My research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, presented at international conferences, and featured in outlets like Psychology Today, Forbes, and Therapy Tips.

I established ACMH to provide culturally sensitive, evidence-based mental health care, with a special commitment to serving the Albanian-Canadian community. As the first Albanian-speaking clinical psychologist in Ontario registered to work with adults, I am proud to offer therapy in both Albanian and English, helping clients navigate the complexities of cultural adaptation and identity. As someone who was born in Albania and moved to Canada as a teenager, I understand the unique challenges of cultural adaptation. I am dedicated to supporting clients from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, with culturally informed and individualized care.

If you’re looking for a warm, supportive environment to explore your challenges and take the next step toward healing, I’d be honored to support you and your loved ones. Let’s work together to help you achieve well-being and balance in your life.
